Oversize & Overweight Permit Rules by State

Tap a state for its legal limits without a permit, the sizes that trigger a permit and an escort, travel hours and curfews, signage, and the permit office phone. Every page is generated from the JaloPermit Atlas, the free state Field Guide in the app, so the numbers here are the numbers the app shows.

No state matches that search.

Read this before you trust a number. Rules change. The issued permit, posted signs and the state permit office always win over this page. JaloPermit is a reading aid, not a permit-filing service. Guests get 3 free decodes a day with no account and no card, logged-in users get 10 a day, and extra decodes are $3.50 each with no subscription.

Already have your permit?

Decode it into a route card: authorized route, escorts, curfews, weigh stations, truck stops and low-bridge alerts along the way.

What each state page covers

Legal limits without a permit

Width, height, length and gross weight a rig may run at with no permit, plus front and rear overhang where the state publishes them. The length tile says what the state actually measures, because a 53' semitrailer limit and a 65' overall-combination limit are not the same number.

Permit and escort triggers

A table of where the permit tier starts for each dimension and where the first private or police escort comes in, on both of the state's road classes. Below it, the full escort ladder, tier by tier, with the rule behind every tier quoted with its source.

Travel times, curfews and signage

Standard hours, night travel, weekend and holiday bans and urban curfews in the state's own wording, then the sign, flag and beacon requirements.

Permit office

The permit desk phone, official site, email and hours where the Atlas has them, with links to the state's ordering portal, live road map, holiday schedule and pilot car rules.

Every state page has an "Open in Atlas" button. The Atlas lets you type your own load's width, height, length and weight and marks the tier it trips in each state. Read our guides on pilot car escort requirements and how to read an oversize load permit for the bigger picture.

Before you ask dispatch.

Where do the rules on these pages come from?

Every page is generated from the JaloPermit Atlas, the free state Field Guide inside the app. The Atlas entries are compiled from state DOT permit manuals, administrative rules and statutes, and each escort tier quotes its rule and source. The pages are rebuilt from the Atlas data on every deploy; the current entries are dated Jul 31, 2026.

Can I file for a permit here?

No. JaloPermit is a reading aid. Each state page lists the official permit office phone and site, which is where permits are ordered. JaloPermit decodes a permit you already hold into a route card.

Why are Alaska, Hawaii and Washington, DC missing?

The Atlas covers the 48 contiguous states that have a structured rule entry. A state without an Atlas entry does not get a page rather than getting a guessed one.

Is this free, and do I need an account?

Yes, the map and every state page are free with no signup. They are companions to the JaloPermit permit decoder, which turns an issued oversize permit PDF into a route card. Guests get 3 free decodes a day with no account and no card, logged-in users get 10 a day, and extra decodes are $3.50 each with no subscription.
