    Over 14'6" high the Department may require a pole car (a front escort with a height pole set at least 3 in above the load); when it does, the permit says so. It is not a standing requirement below 16 ft. The Department may also ask for a written route survey before the permit issues. Travel times & curfews

When a permitted load can move

  • Standard hours

    Oversize loads may move only from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. Overweight-only loads at legal size may move 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

  • Night travel

    Not permitted for oversize loads; movement must end 30 minutes after sunset. Overweight-only loads that are within legal dimensions may travel at night, 24 hours a day.

  • Weekend travel

    No general weekend restriction: oversize loads may move Saturday and Sunday in daylight, overweight-only loads any day. Extra-long vehicle combination permits are barred Saturday and Sunday. Lincoln/Omaha peak-hour limits are weekdays only.

  • Holiday restrictions

    No oversize movement on holidays or long holidays. Dates and the exact restricted hours are published by NDOT and designated on each permit. The restriction applies to over-dimensional permits.

  • Urban restrictions

    No oversize travel Monday through Friday 7-9 AM and 4-6 PM. Lincoln: Hwys 2, 6, 34 and 77 inside city limits, not I-80. Omaha: all state highways in the urban area including interstates, and I-80 from the Iowa border to milepost 432 at Gretna.

  • Oversize load sign

    Required on loads more than 10 ft wide, displayed on the front of the hauling vehicle and the rear of the load. Signs at least 7 ft long by 18 in high, yellow with black letters at least 10 in high.

  • Flags

    Red flags at least 18 inches square required on all four corners of loads more than 12 ft wide. Flags must be plain red or fluorescent orange cloth, in good repair and free of printing.

  • Beacons

    Escort vehicles must display amber or yellow flashing, rotating or strobe lighting mounted at least 53 inches high and visible at 800 ft. A rear-facing amber strobe on the trailer is required to omit a rear escort on divided routes.
