On non-interstate

Escorts begin at 12'1" wide

Width

  • Permit required8'7" – 10'

Permit required over 8'6" wide (A.A.C. R17-6-102, Table 1 — 8'0" where Table 4 further restricts the route). Continuous 24-hour travel is allowed to 10'0" wide (R17-6-401(A)(1)). No escort is required at this width.

  • Permit required10'1" – 12'

    Arizona sets no statewide escort at this width, but two Tier-1 conditions bite. (1) Metropolitan curfew, R17-6-404: on SR 24, SR 101 Loop, SR 202 Loop and Tucson SR 989, "Over 10' - 12' = Requires rear escort" Monday-Friday 7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. (2) A.A.C. R17-6-412, Table 4 sets a front-and-rear trigger below 12' on about 27 listed segments — "Over 10' - 14' = F/R" (SR 73, SR 83, SR 89, SR 96, SR 186, SR 289, SR 386, SR 473, US 60, US 89), "Over 10' - 12' = F/R" (SR 89A, Oak Creek Canyon) and "Over 11' - 14' = F/R" (US 60) — and R17-6-412(D) makes compliance a condition of accessing the route. Over 10'0" also ends continuous travel (R17-6-401(A)(1)). Verify the Table 4 entry for your exact route and mileposts.

  • Front + Rear12'1" – 14'

ROUTE-SPECIFIC, encoded conservatively. A.A.C. R17-6-412, Table 4 requires front and rear escorts from over 12'0" wide on roughly 135 of Arizona's ~425 listed non-Interstate segments — width cells "Over 12' - 14' = F/R" and "Over 12' - 16' = F/R" on SR 77, SR 78, SR 80, SR 82, SR 83, SR 85, SR 86, SR 87, SR 89, SR 89A, SR 95, SR 179, SR 181, SR 260, SR 264, SR 366, SR 377, SR 564, US 60, US 89, US 163, US 180, US 191 and others — and R17-6-412(D) makes that a condition of accessing the route. The remaining non-Interstate segments carry no escort requirement below 14'0", so check your exact route and mileposts. CONDITIONAL on top of this: a load moving under the night/weekend allowance needs a rear escort from 3:00 a.m. until one-half hour before sunrise (R17-6-402(D)(1)).

  • Front + Rear14'1" – 16'

    A.A.C. R17-6-412, Table 4 requires FRONT AND REAR escorts at this width on 259 of the 298 listed non-Interstate segments — width cell "Over 14' - 16' = F/R". On 77 of those segments the cell reads "+ 2 LE", adding two escorts furnished by the Arizona Department of Public Safety (SR 67, 72, 73, 77, 78, 79, 82, 83, 85, 86, 87, 89, 89A, 96, 97, 99, 177, 181, 186, 260, 264, 277, 286, 289, 377, 386, US 60, US 89, US 89A, US 93); SR 82 MP 0.00-51.59 and SR 87 MP 278.80-342.23 read "+ 3 LE", but R17-6-412(E) caps that requirement at two. The 39 segments needing only a rear escort are the urban freeways: SR 24, SR 51, SR 101 Loop, SR 143, SR 202 Loop, SR 303 Loop and the US 60 Superstition Freeway. R17-6-402(D)(2) independently requires front and rear from 3:00 a.m. until one-half hour before sunrise. Verify the Table 4 entry for your exact route and mileposts.

  • Front + Rear16'1"+

Over 16'0" wide is outside every Arizona envelope allowance: it exceeds the night/weekend width limit (R17-6-402(A)(1)) and Table 4's published width tiers stop at 16'0". The move needs a class C special permit and ADOT sets the escort package as a condition of issuance (R17-6-305(A)). Under R17-6-306(A) the Department may also require additional traffic control by a uniformed certified officer, requested from the Arizona Department of Public Safety at least 12 hours before transport (R17-6-306(B)(1)); Table 4 already requires two such escorts at 14'-16' wide on 77 non-Interstate segments, and R17-6-412(E) caps them at two. The 2 front/rear escorts shown are the retained shipped floor, not a published Arizona tier — confirm with ADOT Commercial Permits.

Height

  • Permit required14'1" – 14'6"

Permit required over 14'0" high (A.A.C. R17-6-102, Table 1 — 13'6" where Table 4 further restricts the route). Continuous 24-hour travel is allowed to 14'6" high (R17-6-401(A)(2)). Arizona sets no statewide height escort below 15'0". ROUTE-SPECIFIC EXCEPTION that starts at 14'0": at the US 60 Queen Creek Tunnel (MP 228.47, Structure 407) A.A.C. R17-6-412, Table 4 requires front and rear escorts for loads over 14' to 16' high, with road closures coordinated by or under the direction of escorts furnished by the Arizona Department of Public Safety and driving in the centre of the tunnel. Table 4 also posts route-specific clearances on non-Interstate routes as low as 13'3" (SR 84 Railroad Underpass) — verify vertical clearance structure by structure before routing.

  • Permit required14'7" – 15'

Over 14'6" high ends continuous travel (R17-6-401(A)(2)): daylight only unless the load stays within 16'0" high and runs on a Table 4 night/weekend route (R17-6-402). Arizona's rules impose no statewide height escort below 15'0", but ADOT may require one — including a height-pole escort — under R17-6-305(A). One Tier-1 route exception: Table 4 requires front and rear escorts, road closures coordinated by escorts furnished by the Arizona Department of Public Safety, and driving in the centre of the bore for loads over 14' to 16' high at the US 60 Queen Creek Tunnel (MP 228.47, Structure 407).

  • Permit required15'1" – 16'

No standing Arizona rule requires an escort or a height pole at this height in daylight. A front escort with a height pole is required only when the load uses the night/weekend allowance, and only from 3:00 a.m. until one-half hour before sunrise. In daylight (one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset) any escort is set by ADOT as a condition of the permit, so follow your permit. Route exception: at the US 60 Queen Creek Tunnel (MP 228.47), Table 4 requires front and rear escorts plus two law enforcement escorts who direct road closures, and driving in the centre of the tunnel, for loads over 14' to 16' high. Source: Ariz. Admin. Code R17-6-402(D)(3), R17-6-401(B), R17-6-305(A) and R17-6-412 Table 4 (amended eff. 7/8/2022).

  • Permit required16'1"+

No Arizona rule sets a standing escort or height pole above 16'0" high. Above 16' the load is outside continuous travel and the night/weekend allowance, so it moves in daylight on a class C special permit unless ADOT approves otherwise, and ADOT writes any escort, including a height-pole escort, on that permit. If overhead utility lines cross the route, notify the utility company before the move. Arizona's only pole rule above 16' covers Page-Lake Powell houseboat moves: over 17' high needs a front escort with a height pole. Source: Ariz. Admin. Code R17-6-305(A), R17-6-308, R17-6-401(A)(2), R17-6-402(A)(2) and (E), and R17-6-210(D) (amended eff. 7/8/2022).

Length

  • Permit required65'1" – 80'

Permit required over the A.A.C. R17-6-102, Table 1 legal lengths — 53' semitrailer or 65' overall combination on State Highway System routes off the National Network, 57'6" semitrailer on the National Network. Continuous 24-hour travel is allowed to 120'0" overall (R17-6-401(A)(5)). Arizona sets no length-based escort at this length, though ADOT may require escorts under R17-6-305(A). Table 4 makes some routes far stricter: SR 88 (Apache Trail) requires a class C permit over 40', SR 89A over 50', and SR 88 east of MP 220.20 bars trucks over 40' entirely.

  • Permit required80'1" – 120'

Still inside continuous-travel eligibility (120'0" overall, R17-6-401(A)(5)) and Arizona has no statewide length escort tier. ROUTE-SPECIFIC: A.A.C. R17-6-412, Table 4 requires front and rear escorts from 80' on the mountain segments of SR 260 (MP 357.72 to MP 398.67) and SR 373 — length cell "80'+ requires F/R" — and "80'+ non-articulated requires F/R; 110'+ articulated requires F/R" on SR 77 (MP 113.60-170.90) and US 60 (MP 226.87-238.25, Queen Creek). R17-6-307(C) separately requires a front escort over 20 feet of front overhang, a rear escort over 20 feet of rear overhang, and front and rear escorts when both exceed 20 feet. Verify the Table 4 entry for your exact route and mileposts.

  • Rear escort120'1" – 150'

Over 120'0" overall the load loses continuous-travel eligibility (R17-6-401(A)(5)) and night/weekend eligibility (R17-6-402(A)(3)): daylight only on a class C special permit. RETAINED VALUE — Arizona publishes no numeric length escort tier anywhere in 17 A.A.C. 6; R17-6-305(A) leaves the count to ADOT, and the only length triggers in the rules are Table 4's route-specific 40'/50'/80'/110' entries and the 20-foot overhang rule in R17-6-307(C). This 1 rear escort is kept as the conservative floor because no Tier-1 source shows Arizona requires less; note that on SR 260, SR 373, SR 77 and US 60 the real Table 4 trigger is 80', far lower. Confirm with ADOT Commercial Permits.

  • Front + Rear150'1"+

RETAINED from the shipped ladder as the conservative floor — 150 feet is not an Arizona-published escort threshold. What IS Tier-1 at this length: the move is daylight-only on a class C special permit, ADOT sets all escorts as a condition of issuance (R17-6-305(A)), and "The Department may require additional traffic control by a uniformed certified law enforcement officer to ensure highway safety" (R17-6-306(A)). Table 4 already requires two law enforcement escorts alongside front and rear on 77 non-Interstate segments, and R17-6-412(E) caps law enforcement escorts at two. Confirm the package with ADOT Commercial Permits.

Weight

  • Permit required80,001 lbs – 150,000 lbs

Permit required over 80,000 lbs overall combination (A.A.C. R17-6-102, Table 1; 20,000 lbs steering and single axle). Continuous 24-hour travel is allowed to 250,000 lbs (R17-6-401(A)(6)). Arizona publishes no weight-triggered escort tier — ADOT may require escorts as a condition of permit issuance (R17-6-305(A)). Structure-specific conditions start lower on some bridges: Table 4 sets the SR 89A Midgley/Wilson Canyon Bridge (Structure 232, MP 375.66) threshold at 100,001 lbs, and SR 88 restricts anything over 20,000 lbs to a class C permit east of MP 220.20.

  • Permit required150,001 lbs – 250,000 lbs

STRUCTURE-SPECIFIC. Arizona publishes no statewide weight-based escort tier, so no escort count is asserted here — the requirement below is mandatory only at listed structures, and only 10 of Table 4's ~600 rows carry it. A.A.C. R17-6-412, Table 4 requires, for Class A permitted vehicles of "150,001 through 250,000" lbs crossing listed structures — US 93's Burro Creek Bridge (Structure 846, MP 139.07), SR 82's San Pedro River Bridge (Structure 403, MP 61.20), US 60's Queen Creek and Pinto Creek Bridges, SR 73, SR 188, US 89 and SR 89A — that drivers "Coordinate road closures by or under the direction of two law enforcement escorts; and Cross on center of bridge at a constant speed of no more than 10 mph while on bridge." The SR 89A Midgley/Wilson Canyon Bridge imposes the same condition from 100,001 lbs. R17-6-412(E) caps law enforcement escorts at two. Away from those structures ADOT decides under R17-6-305(A). Continuous 24-hour travel is still allowed to 250,000 lbs (R17-6-401(A)(6)).

  • Permit required250,001 lbs+

Over 250,000 lbs is outside continuous-travel eligibility (R17-6-401(A)(6)) and outside the night/weekend allowance (R17-6-402(A)(4)): daylight only on a class C special permit. A.A.C. R17-6-412, Table 4: "Class C permitted vehicles with a gross weight of: 250,001 or more require special analysis and approval from the ADOT Bridge Group" (150,001 or more at the SR 89A Midgley/Wilson Canyon Bridge). Arizona publishes no escort count at this weight, so none is asserted: ADOT sets all escorts as a condition of issuance (R17-6-305(A)) and may require additional traffic control by a uniformed certified law enforcement officer (R17-6-306(A)), requested from the Arizona Department of Public Safety at least 12 hours before transport. Expect a full escort package on the permit and confirm with ADOT Commercial Permits.

On interstate

Escorts begin at 14'1" wide

  • Permit required10'1" – 11'

Over 10'0" wide the load loses continuous-travel eligibility (R17-6-401(A)(1)): daylight only, one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, unless the route is authorized for night/weekend transport under R17-6-402. Table 4 lists no Interstate width escort below 14'0", but ADOT may require escorts as a condition of permit issuance (R17-6-305(A)). Metropolitan curfew (R17-6-404): over 10'-16' wide, no transport on I-10 through Phoenix and Tucson, I-17, I-19 and Business 8 in Yuma, Monday-Friday 7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m.

  • Permit required11'1" – 14'

No unconditional escort at this width on Interstates — A.A.C. R17-6-412, Table 4 lists no Interstate width escort below 14'0". CONDITIONAL: a load moving under the night/weekend allowance must have a REAR escort from 3:00 a.m. until one-half hour before sunrise — R17-6-402(D)(1), "Over 11 to 14 feet in width requires a rear escort". ADOT may also require escorts under R17-6-305(A). Metropolitan curfew bars over 10'-16' wide on I-10, I-17 and I-19 Monday-Friday 7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m.

  • Rear escort14'1" – 16'

A.A.C. R17-6-412, Table 4 requires a rear escort at this width on 170 of the 177 listed Interstate segments (I-8, I-10, I-17, I-19, I-40) — width cell "Over 14' - 16' = R". Two stricter exceptions: Interstate 15 for its entire Arizona length (MP 0.00 Nevada line to MP 29.40 Utah line) reads "Over 14' - 16' = F/R + 2 LE", i.e. front and rear escorts PLUS two escorts furnished by the Arizona Department of Public Safety; Interstate 17 MP 229.07 (Anthem Road) to MP 242.15 (Rock Springs Road) reads "F/R". Front AND rear are also required from 3:00 a.m. until one-half hour before sunrise under the night/weekend allowance (R17-6-402(D)(2)).

Under R17-6-306(A) the Department may also require additional traffic control by a uniformed certified officer, requested from the Arizona Department of Public Safety at least 12 hours before transport (R17-6-306(B)(1)); Table 4 already requires two such escorts at 14'-16' wide on Interstate 15, and R17-6-412(E) caps them at two.

No escort is required at this height on any Interstate segment — Table 4 carries no height-escort footnote on the Interstate system. Table 4 does post hundreds of route-specific Interstate clearances, many in the 15'7"-15'11" range and some as low as 14'6" — verify vertical clearance structure by structure before routing.

  • Permit required14'7" – 15'

Over 14'6" high ends continuous travel (R17-6-401(A)(2)): daylight only, one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, unless the load stays within 16'0" high and runs 3:00 a.m. to one-half hour after sunset on a Table 4 night/weekend route (R17-6-402). Arizona's rules impose no height escort below 15'0", but ADOT may require one — including a height-pole escort — as a condition of permit issuance (R17-6-305(A)).

Table 4 sets no height escort on any Interstate segment.

Source: Ariz. Admin. Code R17-6-305(A), R17-6-308, R17-6-401(A)(2) and R17-6-402(A)(2) and (E) (amended eff. 7/8/2022).

Length

  • Permit required65'1" – 80'

Permit required over the A.A.C. R17-6-102, Table 1 legal lengths — 57'6" semitrailer on the Interstate and National Network, 53' semitrailer or 65' overall combination on other State Highway System routes. Continuous 24-hour travel is allowed to 120'0" overall (R17-6-401(A)(5)). Arizona sets no length-based escort at this length, though ADOT may require escorts under R17-6-305(A).

  • Permit required80'1" – 120'

Still inside continuous-travel eligibility (120'0" overall, R17-6-401(A)(5)) and Arizona has no statewide length escort tier. ROUTE-SPECIFIC: A.A.C. R17-6-412, Table 4 requires escorts by length on Interstate 15 for its entire Arizona length (MP 0.00 Nevada line to MP 29.40 Utah line) — length cell "Over 100' non-articulated = F/R + 2 LE", i.e. front and rear escorts plus two escorts furnished by the Arizona Department of Public Safety. R17-6-307(C) separately requires a front escort over 20 feet of front overhang, a rear escort over 20 feet of rear overhang, and front and rear escorts when both exceed 20 feet.

6; R17-6-305(A) leaves the count to ADOT, and the only length triggers in the rules are Table 4's route-specific 80'/100'/110' entries and the 20-foot overhang rule in R17-6-307(C). This 1 rear escort is kept as the conservative floor because no Tier-1 source shows Arizona requires less; confirm the package with ADOT Commercial Permits.

  • Front + Rear150'1"+

RETAINED from the shipped ladder as the conservative floor — 150 feet is not an Arizona-published escort threshold. What IS Tier-1 at this length: the move is daylight-only on a class C special permit (R17-6-401(B)(1), R17-6-402(A)(3)), ADOT sets all escorts as a condition of issuance (R17-6-305(A)), and "The Department may require additional traffic control by a uniformed certified law enforcement officer to ensure highway safety" (R17-6-306(A)). Table 4 already requires two law enforcement escorts alongside front and rear on Interstate 15, and R17-6-412(E) caps law enforcement escorts at two.

Structure-specific conditions start lower on some bridges: Table 4 sets the SR 89A Midgley/Wilson Canyon Bridge threshold at 100,001 lbs.

A.A.C. R17-6-412, Table 4 requires, for Class A permitted vehicles of "150,001 through 250,000" lbs crossing listed structures — on the Interstate system that is Interstate 15's Virgin River Bridge #5 (Structures 1617/1618, MP 15.38/15.50) and nothing else — that drivers "Coordinate road closures by or under the direction of two law enforcement escorts; and Cross on center of bridge at a constant speed of no more than 10 mph while on bridge." R17-6-412(E) caps law enforcement escorts at two.

A.A.C. R17-6-412, Table 4: "Class C permitted vehicles with a gross weight of: 250,001 or more require special analysis and approval from the ADOT Bridge Group." Arizona publishes no escort count at this weight, so none is asserted: ADOT sets all escorts as a condition of issuance (R17-6-305(A)) and may require additional traffic control by a uniformed certified law enforcement officer (R17-6-306(A)), requested from the Arizona Department of Public Safety at least 12 hours before transport. Expect a full escort package on the permit and confirm with ADOT Commercial Permits.
