Travel times & curfews

When a permitted load can move

  • Standard hours

Oversize loads move during daylight hours only: one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. Loads permitted solely for overweight may travel continuously, day and night.

  • Night travel

Not permitted for oversize loads; daylight hours only. Loads permitted solely for overweight are exempt and may move continuously. ODOT's Executive Director may endorse an individual oversize permit for night travel for good cause.

  • Weekend travel

Saturday and Sunday travel permitted; state law and ODOT rules set no general weekend restriction. Daylight-hours limits and the weekday metro interstate curfews still apply. Houses and buildings moved under permit may not move on Saturday or Sunday.

  • Holiday restrictions

No permitted movement on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day. Movement is expressly allowed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day and Veterans Day.

  • Urban restrictions

Oversize loads may not move on interstate highways in Oklahoma, Tulsa or Cleveland counties from 7:00-9:00 a.m. or 3:30-6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The 2-mile section of I-35 between SH-9 East (Exit 108) and SH-9 West (Exit 106) is exempt.

Signs, flags & lights

Signage Oklahoma expects

  • Oversize load sign

Yellow sign with black lettering, at least 5 feet long by 14 inches high, letters at least 8 inches high with a 1-1/8 inch brush stroke. Required on the front of the towing vehicle and the rear of whichever unit extends farthest. Not to be displayed on a legal load.

  • Flags

Red or fluorescent orange flags at least 18 by 18 inches on all overwidth and overlength permitted loads, at the four corners and any extremity. Rear overhang of 4 feet or more must be flagged: one flag if the projection is 2 feet wide or less, two if wider.

  • Beacons

Amber warning lights are required on escort vehicles: one AAMVA-approved rotating or flashing amber beacon or an amber light bar mounted on the roof. Blue, red or white rotating lights are not authorized. Lights must not be displayed unless actually escorting.
