Travel times & curfews

When a permitted load can move

  • Standard hours

Oversize permits are limited to the daytime hours of sunrise to sunset. Overweight-only permits, legal in size, are authorized 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. No permitted move when visibility is under 500 feet, in hazardous road conditions, or if the load cannot hold 40 mph.

  • Night travel

Not permitted for oversize loads between sunset and sunrise. The Chief Administrator may grant a written waiver, requested with the application, for congestion, business hardship or emergency; a waived night move adds one escort. Overweight-only permits may run at night.

  • Weekend travel

No blanket Saturday or Sunday restriction. Oversize loads may move any day between sunrise and sunset; overweight-only permits are authorized 7 days a week. Holiday bans can take in an adjacent Friday or Monday. MVC may still set the exact day and time on the permit.

  • Holiday restrictions

Oversize travel is barred on New Year's Day, Memorial Day and the Friday before, Independence Day, Labor Day and the Friday before, Thanksgiving and the Wednesday before, and Christmas. A Sunday holiday closes the next Monday; a Saturday holiday closes the prior Friday.

  • Urban restrictions

NJDOT permits cover state routes only; county and municipal roads permit separately. NJ Turnpike, Garden State Parkway south of Exit 105 and Atlantic City Expressway need the toll authority's express approval. Route 495, Holland Tunnel, GW Bridge: clear with Port Authority.
