On non-interstate

Escorts begin at 20'1" wide

Width

  • Permit required8'7" – 10'

Permit required, no escort. South Dakota's lowest non-interstate trigger sits above ten feet and applies only on the listed Black Hills routes (ARSD 70:03:01:20(2)); the general state trunk highway trigger is above twenty feet (70:03:01:20(4)).

  • Permit required10'1" – 16'

No escort is required on most South Dakota highways at this width, but ARSD 70:03:01:20(2) requires a FRONT ESCORT for "Vehicles over ten feet wide" on twelve named Black Hills routes: US 14A (Colorado Blvd in Spearfish to its south junction with US 85); US 85 (Wyoming line to its southernmost junction with US 14A, and its junction with US 14A in Lead to its junction with US 14A in Deadwood); US 385 (north junction with US 16 to its junction with US 85, and its junction with US 18 in Hot Springs to SD 89 in Pringle); SD 44 (US 385 to US 16B); SD 231; US 16A; SD 244; SD 87; SD 89 (US 16A in Custer to SD 87); SD 36; SD 40 (US 16A to SD 79); and SD 473. A local highway patrol trooper may waive the front escort for a specified period on any section with adequate geometrics. The schema has no Black Hills road class, so this route-scoped mandate is carried here.

  • Permit required16'1" – 20'

The general state trunk highway trigger is above twenty feet (ARSD 70:03:01:20(4)), so no escort is due on most highways at this width. But ARSD 70:03:01:20(3) requires a FRONT ESCORT for "Vehicles over sixteen feet wide" on seven named routes: US 16 (east junction with US 16A at the Keystone Wye to the Wyoming border); US 14A (south junction with US 85 to I-90 Exit 30); US 385 (SD 89 to US 16); SD 89 (US 18 to US 385 at Pringle); SD 85 (north junction with US 14A in Deadwood to I-90 Exit 17); SD 71 (US 18 in Hot Springs to the Nebraska border); and SD 471 (SD 71 to US 18 at Edgemont). The twelve Black Hills routes listed in 70:03:01:20(2) also still demand a front escort at this width. A trooper may waive the front escort on a section with adequate geometrics.

  • Front escort20'1"+

ARSD 70:03:01:20(4): "For all other highways on the state trunk highway system, vehicles over twenty feet wide require an escort." Position is FRONT because 70:03:01:20 places the escort "in front on two-lane highways or in the rear on divided highways" and non_interstate stands in for undivided here; on a divided non-interstate segment the escort belongs at the rear. The rule sets no upper width cap, so this tier is open-ended. Multiple escorts and flagpersons are required if the load extends more than two feet into an adjacent driving or passing lane, or if traffic cannot pass without using the shoulder (ARSD 70:03:01:20.01). Daylight-only whenever an escort is required (ARSD 70:03:01:07(1)).

Height

  • Permit required14'1" – 14'6"

Permit required. South Dakota's escort rule is width-only: ARSD 70:03:01:20 states escorts are required "as follows" and then lists four width triggers and nothing else, so there is no height-based escort and no height-pole requirement at any height. "All vertical clearances are the responsibility of the permit holder" (ARSD 70:03:01:13). The permit-issuing authority may still require escort vehicles because of route limitations, traffic conditions, or unusual permit vehicle configuration conditions (70:03:01:20(4)). Special traffic handling — escorts and flagpersons — may also be required if the permit vehicle "has to perform special maneuvers in order to make turns, cross bridges, or clear height restrictions" (ARSD 70:03:01:20.01); that is the only provision in South Dakota law that ties an escort to height, and it is conditional on the maneuver, not on the height itself.

  • Permit required14'7" – 16'6"

Permit required. No height-based escort and no height pole: ARSD 70:03:01:20 triggers escorts on width only, and "All vertical clearances are the responsibility of the permit holder" (70:03:01:13). Above 14'6" the move becomes daylight-only (ARSD 70:03:01:07(4)). The permit-issuing authority may still require escort vehicles because of route limitations (70:03:01:20(4)), and route clearance must be verified before moving (70:03:01:02.01).

  • Permit required16'7" – 20'

Permit required. South Dakota still imposes no height-based escort and no height pole at this height (ARSD 70:03:01:20 is width-only; 70:03:01:13 puts all vertical clearances on the permit holder), but SDDOT/Highway Patrol warn that "loads more than 16 feet high may take longer" to permit because they need Department of Transportation or Highway Patrol review. The permit-issuing authority may require escort vehicles because of route limitations (70:03:01:20(4)). Daylight-only above 14'6" (70:03:01:07(4)).

Length

  • Permit required75'1" – 130'

Permit required. ARSD 70:03:01:20 sets no length-based escort trigger — its four subdivisions are width triggers only. "OVERSIZE LOAD" warning signs are required over 95 feet (70:03:01:14.01). Special traffic handling, meaning escorts and flagpersons, is required if the vehicle must perform special maneuvers to make turns or cross bridges (70:03:01:20.01), and the permit-issuing authority may require escort vehicles because of route limitations or unusual configuration (70:03:01:20(4)). Combinations over 110 feet are daylight-only (70:03:01:07(6)). Under an electric utility permit, a vehicle hauling poles longer than 75 feet "may move only with a rear escort" (ARSD 70:03:01:109) — a mandate that attaches inside this band.

  • Permit required130'1" – 200'

Permit required. South Dakota publishes no length-based escort threshold at any length: ARSD 70:03:01:20 triggers escorts on width only. Special traffic handling — escorts and flagpersons — is required if the vehicle must perform special maneuvers to make turns or cross bridges (70:03:01:20.01), and at this length the permit-issuing authority routinely may require escort vehicles because of route limitations or unusual permit vehicle configuration (70:03:01:20(4)). Daylight-only for combinations over 110 feet (70:03:01:07(6)); "OVERSIZE LOAD" signs required over 95 feet (70:03:01:14.01). Under an electric utility permit, poles longer than 75 feet may move only with a rear escort (70:03:01:109).

Weight

  • Permit required80,000 lbs+

South Dakota publishes no weight-based escort threshold: ARSD 70:03:01:20 triggers escorts on width only, and nothing in ARSD article 70:03 conditions an escort on gross or axle weight. Floor is the 80,000 lb legal gross. The permit-issuing authority may still require escort vehicles because of route limitations, traffic conditions, or unusual permit vehicle configuration (70:03:01:20(4)); SDDOT/Highway Patrol flag "loads that exceed 200,000 pounds, loads that are overweight and wider than 12 feet" for extended permit review. Overweight-only permit vehicles may move at night provided no escort is required (70:03:01:07).

On interstate

Escorts begin at 16'1" wide

Width

  • Permit required8'7" – 16'

Permit required, no escort and no pilot car at or below 16'0" on the interstate system. South Dakota's interstate escort threshold sits above sixteen feet (ARSD 70:03:01:20(1); operative text quoted in the tier above 16'0"). Movement is daylight-only once the load is wider than 10 feet (ARSD 70:03:01:07(3)).

  • Rear escort16'1"+

ARSD 70:03:01:20: "Escort vehicles are required in front on two-lane highways or in the rear on divided highways as follows: (1) Vehicles over sixteen feet wide traveling on the interstate highway system require an escort." Interstates are divided, so the escort runs at the rear. The rule sets no upper width cap, so this tier is open-ended. Multiple escorts and flagpersons are required if the load extends more than two feet into an adjacent driving or passing lane (ARSD 70:03:01:20.01). Daylight-only whenever an escort is required (ARSD 70:03:01:07(1)).

Only single-trip overweight permits are issued on the interstate system (70:03:01:08).

Travel times & curfews

When a permitted load can move

  • Standard hours

Daylight hours run from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. Daylight-only is conditional, not blanket: it applies whenever an escort is required or the load cannot hold posted speed. Confirm overweight-only night moves with the permit office.

  • Night travel

Night movement requires no escort, width 10' or less, height 14'6" or less, single unit 45' or less, combination 110' or less, no unit over 60' in a 2-unit or 48' in a 3-or-more-unit rig, and travel on interstates or within 2 miles of an interchange.

  • Weekend travel

No weekend restrictions. Oversize and overweight loads may move Saturday and Sunday under the same daylight and night-travel rules that apply on weekdays.

  • Holiday restrictions

None. South Dakota has no holiday movement restrictions; the normal daylight and night-travel rules apply on holidays.

  • Urban restrictions

No statewide urban curfew; cities and counties set their own rules on local roads. During the Sturgis Rally, wide or long loads in Custer, Fall River, Lawrence, Meade and Pennington counties need Region Engineer approval and may move only until 10:00 am.

Signs, flags & lights

Signage South Dakota expects

  • Oversize load sign

Required on oversize permit loads over 12' wide, over 95' long, or moving at night. One sign front, one rear, minimum 18" high by 84" wide, yellow with black upper-case letters 10" high, legible at 500 feet, reflectorized for night moves.

  • Flags

Red or orange flags at least 18" by 18" on all corners of any vehicle or load wider than 8'6" and on all corners of a load wider than the hauling bed. Also on front overhang over 3' and rear overhang over 4': one flag if the end is 2' wide or less, two if wider.

  • Beacons

No beacon is required on the load under the general oversize rules, but lamps and reflectors must mark overhang at night. Escort vehicles must display a revolving amber light or two flashing amber lights at least 4" in diameter.
