On other roads

Escorts begin at 12'1" wide

Width

  • Permit required8'7" – 12'

Permit required over 8'6" wide (ARDOT legal width 8'6"; 8'0" for manufactured homes). On highways that are not controlled access or divided with four (4) or more lanes, 27 CAR 111-205(e) and 111-505(b)(3) start the escort requirement "over twelve feet (12')", so no width-keyed escort applies at or below 12'0". Manufactured homes use the same 12'0" trigger (111-505(c)(2)). The Permit Section may require escorts, including one or more law enforcement vehicles, in the interest of safety (111-505(f)).

  • Front escort12'1" – 14'

27 CAR 111-205(e) and 111-505(b)(3): on all highways that are not controlled access or divided highways with four (4) or more lanes, the movement of a permitted vehicle "over twelve feet (12') in width but not more than fourteen feet (14') ... shall be accompanied by one (1) escort vehicle that shall travel in front of the permitted vehicle". Escort and towing vehicle keep 200 feet between them (111-504(j)). Manufactured homes over 12'0" through 14'6" take the same single front escort (111-505(c)(2)). On a controlled access, divided highway with four or more lanes this width range is not escort-triggered (111-505(b)(1)(A)). The Permit Section may require additional escorts (111-505(f)).

  • Front + Rear14'1" – 16'6"

27 CAR 111-205(f) and 111-505(b)(2): on all highways that are not controlled access or divided highways with four (4) or more lanes, "the movement of any vehicle, which exceeds fourteen feet (14') in width, shall be accompanied by two (2) escort vehicles. One (1) escort vehicle shall precede the permitted vehicle and one (1) escort shall follow it." Manufactured homes cross to two escorts above 14'6" (111-505(c)(3); Ark. Code 27-35-306 and ARDOT's 2023 Permit Rules manual both print 14'9" - the stricter codified figure is shown). Cutter blades and other equipment of a hazardous nature over 14'0" must be cradled down to 14'0" or less (111-205(i)). The Permit Section may require additional escorts (111-505(f)).

  • Front + Rear16'7" – 20'

Two escorts, one preceding and one following, as above (27 CAR 111-505(b)(2)). Width of more than 16'6" makes the move a "super load of extraordinary weight or dimension" (111-110(a)): issued at ARDOT's discretion, engineering examinations may be required, and the application must be submitted far enough in advance. Permitted width off the Interstate system is capped at 20'0" (111-205(a)); interstate permits stop at 18'0" (111-205(c)).

  • Front + Rear20'1"+

27 CAR 111-205(a) caps permitted width on all highways except interstates at "twenty feet (20') or less", judged on public safety, highway condition, distance traveled and traffic volume. Above 20'0", 111-205(b): "Under emergency conditions and at the discretion of the Permit Section, a maximum overall width of twenty-four feet (24') may be authorized by permit for short moves." Two escorts (one preceding, one following) remain the published requirement over 14'0" (111-505(b)(2)), and a command-rank AHP officer may require additional escorts for the safety of the traveling public (111-205(g)(1)). House and structural moves are a separate permit class (111-701 et seq.), authorized up to 28'6" wide exclusive of roof overhang, and always take one escort in front and one behind (111-505(e)).

Height

  • Permit required14'1" – 15'

27 CAR 111-206(a): "no vehicles operated upon the state highway system, laden or unladen, shall exceed a height of fourteen feet (14') except by permit issued by the Permit Section." The height escort starts above 15'0" (111-206(b)); 15'6" or more is a super load (111-110(a)). Arkansas applies the same height rules on every road class. The Permit Section may require escorts, including a law enforcement vehicle, in the interest of safety (111-505(f)). A permit "shall not be an assurance ... that the clearance will accommodate the height for which the permit is written", and the permittee must check the route before travel (111-105(f), (h)).

  • Front + High pole15'1" – 15'5"

27 CAR 111-206(b), 111-504(k)(1) and 111-505(d)(1): "Any vehicle or load that exceeds fifteen feet (15') in height is required to have one (1) escort vehicle equipped with a clearance bar that extends six inches (6") above the permitted height preceding the load, unless otherwise specified on the permit." The clearance-bar (high-pole) vehicle IS the single lead escort - Arkansas does not add a second vehicle at this height - and the same rule applies on every road class. The Permit Section may require additional escorts (111-505(f)).

  • Front + High pole15'6" – 17'

Single lead escort with a clearance bar six inches above the permitted height continues (27 CAR 111-206(b)). At "height of fifteen feet six inches (15' 6") or more" the move is also a "super load of extraordinary weight or dimension" (111-110(a)): permit issued at ARDOT's discretion, engineering examinations may be required, and the application must be submitted far enough in advance.

  • Front + High pole17'1"+

The single lead escort with clearance bar continues (27 CAR 111-206(b)). Above 17'0", 111-206(c)(1) adds: "the mover shall obtain written agreements signed by the owners of overhead facilities (utilities, traffic signals, etc.) along the route and the move shall be accompanied by representatives of the owners." 111-206(c)(2) lets those owners decline in writing instead, so the utility accompaniment is conditional and is not counted here as a pilot vehicle. Super load review applies at 15'6" and above (111-110(a)). The Permit Section may require additional escorts (111-505(f)).

Length

  • Permit required53'7" – 90'

27 CAR 111-207(a): "If a semitrailer or trailer, laden or unladen, does not exceed fifty-three feet six inches (53' 6"), there is no overall length restriction, and the vehicle is considered to be in compliance with the length law"; a permit is required once the trailer exceeds 53'6" or the overall combination exceeds 60'0" (111-207(b)-(c)(1)). No escort is keyed to length below 100'0" (111-505(a)(1)), and 111-207(c)(7) confirms combinations within the legal trailer length that need no other over-dimensional permit "are not required to have an escort". A combination 90'0" or less overall with legal width and height "may travel at any time on a twenty-four-hour, seven-day-a-week basis by obtaining a permit" (111-207(c)(2)). The Permit Section may require escorts in the interest of safety (111-505(f)).

  • Permit required90'1" – 99'11"

Still no length-keyed escort - the first length trigger is 100'0" (27 CAR 111-505(a)(1)). Over 90'0" overall, 111-207(c)(3): "If the overall length exceeds ninety feet (90'), the vehicle shall travel only during daylight hours and on days not listed as holidays in 27 CAR 111-106(f)." A front overhang over 3'0" needs its own permit and no permit is issued for a front overhang over 20'0" (111-207(c)(5)-(6)). The Permit Section may require escorts in the interest of safety (111-505(f)).

  • Front escort100' – 115'

27 CAR 111-505(a)(1) places the single escort in FRONT on every highway other than interstates, controlled access and divided highways with four (4) or more lanes: "One (1) escort shall follow a vehicle with a load of one hundred feet (100') or more in length on interstates, controlled access, and divided highways with four (4) or more lanes, and lead a vehicle with a load of one hundred feet (100') or more in length on all other highways." Exactly 100'0" is inside the requirement ("or more"). Above 115'0" two escorts are required on highways with fewer than four lanes (111-505(a)(2)). An overall length of 100'0" or more is also a super load (111-110(a)); travel is daylight-only over 90'0" (111-207(c)(3)).

  • Front + Rear115'1"+

27 CAR 111-505(a)(2): "Two (2) escorts (one (1) leading and one (1) following) are required on all highways with fewer than four (4) lanes for a load that exceeds one hundred fifteen feet (115')." Road-class approximation: this class is encoded to the stricter fewer-than-four-lane case; a four-lane highway that is not controlled access or divided reads literally under 111-505(a)(1) as one leading escort. Super load (111-110(a)); daylight-only travel over 90'0" (111-207(c)(3)); no over-length permit is issued for a truck tractor-semitrailer-trailer combination (111-207(e)(1)).

Weight

  • Permit required80,001 lbs – 179,999 lbs

Arkansas keys no escort to weight. 27 CAR 111-308(b): "No escorts are required for a vehicle traveling under an overweight permit if the dimensions of the vehicle or load do not exceed the width, height, or length limitations as provided in Arkansas Code 27-35-206, 27-35-207, and 27-35-208 unless deemed necessary by the Permit Section for the safety of the motoring public." Legal gross is 80,000 lbs on five or more axles. An overweight-only load within legal dimensions may be permitted for continuous movement, including holidays and nighttime (111-105(e), 111-307(a)). Permit axle caps: 20,000 lbs single, 46,000 lbs tandem, 60,000 lbs tridem, 68,000 lbs quadrum (111-306). If the load is also over-dimensional, the width, height and length bands govern the escorts.

  • Permit required180,000 lbs+

A gross weight of "one hundred eighty thousand pounds (180,000 lbs.) or more" is a "super load of extraordinary weight" under 27 CAR 111-110(a): ARDOT "shall have the discretion to issue a permit" only for movements "essential to public health, welfare, safety, or defense" and "shall have the discretion to require engineering examinations", with the application submitted far enough in advance. Arkansas still keys no escort to weight (111-308(b)); the Permit Section may require escorts, including one or more law enforcement vehicles, in the interest of safety (111-505(f)). Issuance "shall not be an assurance that bridges and structures are capable of carrying the vehicle and load" (111-105(f)).

On divided 4-lane roads

Escorts begin at 14'1" wide

Width

  • Permit required8'7" – 12'

Permit required over 8'6" wide (ARDOT legal width 8'6"; 8'0" for manufactured homes). No width-keyed escort at or below 12'0" anywhere in Arkansas: 27 CAR 111-505(b)(1)(A) starts the escort "in excess of fourteen feet (14')" on any controlled access, divided highway with four (4) or more lanes, and 111-505(b)(3) starts it "over twelve feet (12')" on all other highways. The Permit Section may still require escorts, including one or more law enforcement vehicles, in the interest of safety (111-505(f)). Road-class approximation: Arkansas splits on "controlled access, divided highway with four (4) or more lanes" versus "all other highways", not on Interstate status.

  • Permit required12'1" – 14'

On a controlled access, divided highway with four (4) or more lanes no escort is keyed to width until the load is "in excess of fourteen feet (14')" (27 CAR 111-205(d)(1), 111-505(b)(1)(A)). WARNING: on any part of the route that is not controlled access or divided with four or more lanes, one escort vehicle traveling in front is required for a load "over twelve feet (12') in width but not more than fourteen feet (14')" (111-205(e), 111-505(b)(3)). Manufactured homes use the same 12'0" front-escort trigger off the four-lane divided system (111-505(c)(2)). The Permit Section may require additional escorts, including a law enforcement vehicle (111-505(f)).

  • Rear escort14'1" – 16'6"

27 CAR 111-205(d) and 111-505(b)(1): "on any controlled access, divided highway with four (4) or more lanes, a permitted vehicle or load in excess of fourteen feet (14') in width, inclusive of overhangs, clearance lights, eaves, or any other appurtenance, shall be accompanied by one (1) escort vehicle", which "shall travel behind the permitted vehicle or load a distance of two hundred feet (200') while in continuous travel". If any segment of the route is not controlled access or divided with four or more lanes, two escorts (one preceding, one following) are required over 14'0" (111-505(b)(2)). Manufactured homes take the single following escort only above 14'6" (111-505(c)(1); Ark. Code 27-35-306 and ARDOT's 2023 Permit Rules manual both print 14'9" - the stricter codified figure is shown). Maximum permitted width on interstate highways is 18'0" (111-205(c)). The Permit Section may require additional escorts (111-505(f)).

  • Rear escort16'7" – 18'

Same single following escort at 200 feet as above (27 CAR 111-505(b)(1)). Over 16'6" wide the move is a "super load of extraordinary weight or dimension" under 111-110(a): ARDOT "shall have the discretion to issue a permit", "shall have the discretion to require engineering examinations", and the application must be submitted far enough in advance. Interstate permits stop at 18'0" (111-205(c)). Two escorts are required on any route segment that is not controlled access or divided with four or more lanes (111-505(b)(2)).

  • Front + Rear18'1"+

27 CAR 111-205(c): "Except for manufactured homes, the maximum overall width of a vehicle authorized to be moved upon interstate highways by permit is eighteen feet (18'), inclusive of: (1) Overhangs; (2) Clearance lights; or (3) Any other appurtenances." A load over 18'0" wide (other than a manufactured home) cannot be permitted on the Interstate system, so it must move on other highways, where 111-505(b)(2) requires two escort vehicles, one preceding and one following. Off-interstate permit width is capped at 20'0" (111-205(a)), with 24'0" only "under emergency conditions and at the discretion of the Permit Section ... for short moves" (111-205(b)). Super load review applies over 16'6" (111-110(a)).

  • Rear escort100' – 115'

27 CAR 111-505(a)(1): "One (1) escort shall follow a vehicle with a load of one hundred feet (100') or more in length on interstates, controlled access, and divided highways with four (4) or more lanes, and lead a vehicle with a load of one hundred feet (100') or more in length on all other highways." Exactly 100'0" is inside the requirement ("or more"). If any part of the route uses a highway with fewer than four lanes, two escorts (one leading, one following) are required above 115'0" (111-505(a)(2)). An overall length of 100'0" or more is also a super load (111-110(a)), and travel is daylight-only over 90'0" (111-207(c)(3)).

  • Rear escort115'1"+

Arkansas's two-escort length rule is expressly limited by lane count: "Two (2) escorts (one (1) leading and one (1) following) are required on all highways with fewer than four (4) lanes for a load that exceeds one hundred fifteen feet (115')" (27 CAR 111-505(a)(2)). On interstates, controlled access and divided highways with four (4) or more lanes the published requirement stays one following escort (111-505(a)(1)) - but any route that uses a highway with fewer than four lanes needs two. Super load (111-110(a)); daylight-only travel over 90'0" (111-207(c)(3)); the Permit Section may require additional escorts (111-505(f)).

Travel times & curfews

When a permitted load can move

  • Standard hours

Daylight hours only for oversize movements, as established by the National Weather Service. Overall length of 90 feet or less with legal width and height may move 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. No movement when visibility is under 500 feet or in inclement weather.

  • Night travel

Not permitted for oversize loads; daylight movement only. Overweight-only loads within legal width, height and length may be permitted for continuous movement, including at night. An overlength combination 90 feet or less overall with legal width and height may move at night.

  • Weekend travel

Saturday and Sunday movement is permitted for over-dimensional loads unless that day falls on a restricted holiday. Movement is blocked on a weekend following a Friday holiday observance or preceding a Monday observance. The Permit Section is closed on weekends.

  • Holiday restrictions

No permits are issued for movement on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day. Movement on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Veterans' Day and Christmas Eve is allowed if the permit is obtained in advance.

  • Urban restrictions

No oversize movement through the Greater Little Rock area from 7:00 to 9:00 AM or 4:00 to 6:00 PM on I-30 mile markers 138 to 143, I-40 mile markers 151 to 155, and all of I-630. Outside those windows no Little Rock curfew applies.

Signs, flags & lights

Signage Arkansas expects

  • Oversize load sign

Required on any load over legal width, height or length. A plainly legible OVERSIZE LOAD sign is displayed across the front and back of the loaded vehicle: durable material, yellow background, black letters with a 2-inch stroke and a minimum 10-inch letter height.

  • Flags

Eighteen-inch red or fluorescent orange flags on all four corners of the load. Escort vehicles carry two 18-inch square solid red flags mounted atop the vehicle at a 40 to 70 degree angle, no more than 8 feet apart and extending no more than 6 inches past each side.

  • Beacons

Every escort vehicle must run a roof-mounted rotating amber light of at least 35,000 candlepower with a 6-inch minimum lens, or an amber strobe of at least 500,000 candlepower flashing at least 80 times per minute. Both must be visible 360 degrees and unobstructed.
