Travel times & curfews

When a permitted load can move

  • Standard hours

    Daylight only: 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset, Monday through Friday. RIDOT additionally bars travel 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. weekdays for loads over 8 ft 6 in wide, over 80 ft long, or over 130,000 lbs.

  • Night travel

    Not permitted for oversize loads. Overweight-only loads that are within legal size and can travel with the flow of traffic are exempt from the daylight rule and may run at night.

  • Weekend travel

    No permit moves from sunset Friday to sunrise Monday. Saturday and Sunday travel is not authorized.

  • Holiday restrictions

    No travel New Year's, MLK, Memorial, Independence, Victory, Labor, Columbus, Veterans, Thanksgiving or Christmas Day. Travel stops at noon the day before a weekday holiday. Also no travel Wed-Sun of Thanksgiving week and Easter weekend. Single-trip permits valid 5 days.

  • Urban restrictions

    Mobile and modular homes over 12 ft wide, construction equipment over 13 ft wide and cranes may move only between sunrise and 7:00 a.m. and between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on all of I-195 and on I-95 from the Massachusetts line to Route 37.

    Black on yellow OVERSIZE LOAD banner, at least 7 ft long by 18 in high with letters at least 10 in high, mounted on the front of the vehicle and the rear of the load. Escort signs at least 5 ft by 12 in. Signs must be removed or covered after delivery.

  • Flags

    Red or orange fluorescent flags at least 18 in square. Overwidth loads carry two to six flags at the widest extremity. Front or rear overhang over 4 ft carries one flag, or two flags if the overhang is more than 2 ft wide.

  • Beacons

    No special lighting is required on the load vehicle, but it must travel with low-beam headlights at all times. Escort vehicles must run flashing yellow lights above the highest point of the vehicle, visible front and rear, plus low beams.
