What moves in Connecticut without a permit
Legal limits are the dimensions and gross weight a vehicle may run at without an oversize or overweight permit. Connecticut publishes its length limit as semitrailer, so compare it against that measurement on your permit, not the overall rig.

When a permitted load can move
- Standard hours
One-half hour after sunrise to one-half hour before sunset. The daylight rule covers overweight-only permits as well as oversize. A single trip permit is valid for one one-way or round trip over a three-day period.
- Night travel
Daylight only unless the Commissioner of Transportation grants special permission before the move. Superload moves (over 150' long, 16' wide, 16' high or 200,000 lbs) are limited to nighttime only and typically require Connecticut State Police escorts.
- Weekend travel
No Saturday or Sunday travel unless a weekend permit is requested. Weekend permits allow Saturday and Sunday travel between daylight and noon for loads up to 12' wide, 13'6" high, 80' long and 160,000 lbs.
- Holiday restrictions
No permit travel on New Year's Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving or Christmas. Most shutdowns begin at 12:00 noon the preceding weekday and run until daylight after the holiday. CTDOT publishes the exact dates each year.
- Urban restrictions
Permit conditions commonly bar moves 6:30-9:00 AM and 4:00-6:00 PM; confirm on the permit face. Mobile, modular and sectional housing units over 12' wide are limited to Tuesday through Thursday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM; other housing units daylight Monday through Friday.
