Travel times & curfews

When a permitted load can move

  • Standard hours

    Sunrise to sunset, Monday through Sunday, unless otherwise stated on the permit.

  • Night travel

    No movement between sunset and sunrise for over-dimension loads. Continuous 24-hour, 7-day travel is authorized when permitted gross weight does not exceed 112,000 lbs and there is no over-dimension of width, length or height.

  • Weekend travel

    Saturday and Sunday travel is authorized sunrise to sunset, the same as weekdays. Overweight-only loads at or under 112,000 lbs with no over-dimension may travel continuously, seven days a week.

  • Holiday restrictions

    Loads over 112,000 lbs or over-dimension in width, length or height cannot travel from noon the weekday before until noon the weekday after Independence Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Travel is authorized on all other holidays by prior issued permit.

  • Urban restrictions

    Loads over 12' wide are prohibited within a 10-mile radius of the city limits of Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill between 7-9 AM and 4-6 PM.

Signs, flags & lights

Signage North Carolina expects

  • Oversize load sign

    Yellow banner 7' long by 18" tall, black 10" letters in 1.5" brush strokes, reading OVERSIZE LOAD or WIDE LOAD, on the front and rear bumpers of any combination permitted over 10' wide. May be two banners totaling 7'.

  • Flags

    Red or orange flags 18" square on all four corners at the widest points of an overwidth load, or as specified on the permit. Loads projecting more than 4' beyond the rear need an 18" flag, or a red or amber light visible 200' from sunset to sunrise.

  • Beacons

    Escort vehicles must display a rotating or strobe amber light on top, visible 500' in all directions. Loads over 102" and up to 120" wide need two operable amber lamps at the widest points between sunset and sunrise. Mobile homes: amber lights at all four corners, 72" high.
