What moves in Massachusetts without a permit
Legal limits are the dimensions and gross weight a vehicle may run at without an oversize or overweight permit. Massachusetts publishes its length limit as semitrailer, so compare it against that measurement on your permit, not the overall rig.

"Permit tier starts" is the lowest size in the Atlas ladder that needs a permit. "First escort" is the lowest size that adds a private or police escort on that road class; the full ladder with each tier's rule and source is below.
Massachusetts escort ladder, tier by tier
Open a tier to read the rule behind it, quoted with its source. Amber tiers add a police escort or a superload review; grey tiers are permit-only with conditions.
Not yet re-verified. Escort thresholds for this state haven’t been re-verified against the state’s own rules yet — treat them as a starting point and confirm with the permit office before you roll.
On non-interstate
Escorts begin at 12'1" wide
Width
Permit required8'7" – 12'
Over 8'6" wide needs a MassDOT special permit; no escort by width up to 12'0". On the Turnpike and Metropolitan Highway System a pilot car must follow only when the load is wider than 12' (up to 13'6"), pilot cars go ahead and behind above 13'6" up to 16', and two Massachusetts State Police vehicles are added only above 16'. Permit services also report a Boston city police escort for oversize moves in Boston. Source: 700 CMR 7.07(4)(d)1-2, 4-5, 7.
Rear escort12'1" – 13'6"
Cape Cod over 12' = 1 + State Police
- Front + Rear 13'7" – 14'11"
Front + Rear15'+
2 + state police. Above 20 ft, this row's escorts are the minimum; the permit sets any more.
Height
Permit required13'7" – 13'8"
Over 13'6" tall needs a MassDOT special permit. No escort and no height pole are required at this height: no Massachusetts statute or regulation requires a height pole, and MassDOT reported to GAO that it has no pole-car requirement for overheight loads. MassDOT may add conditions on the permit. Source: M.G.L. c.90 §19; 700 CMR 7.07(4)(d); GAO-15-235SP (Massachusetts, 2015).
Front escort13'9" – 13'11"
One front escort and a route/height survey over 13'8" tall. MassDOT sets escorts on each permit; this threshold is MassDOT practice as reported by permit services, not a written rule (GAO confirms Massachusetts requires escorts and a route survey for overheight loads). No height pole: no Massachusetts statute or regulation requires one, and MassDOT reported to GAO that it has no pole-car requirement for overheight loads. Source: GAO-15-235SP (Massachusetts, 2015); M.G.L. c.90 §19.
Front + Rear14' – 14'11"
Two escorts over 13'11" tall, depending on route, with a route/height survey. MassDOT sets escorts on each permit; this threshold is MassDOT practice as reported by permit services, not a written rule. No height pole: no Massachusetts statute or regulation requires one, and MassDOT reported to GAO that it has no pole-car requirement for overheight loads. Source: GAO-15-235SP (Massachusetts, 2015); M.G.L. c.90 §19.
Front + Rear15'+
Two escorts plus a Massachusetts State Police escort over 14'11" tall (permit services list both escorts in front). The State Police car is a police escort, not a private pilot car. MassDOT sets escorts on each permit; this threshold is MassDOT practice as reported by permit services, not a written rule (GAO confirms Massachusetts requires law-enforcement escorts for overheight loads). No height pole: no Massachusetts statute or regulation requires one, and MassDOT reported to GAO that it has no pole-car requirement for overheight loads. Source: GAO-15-235SP (Massachusetts, 2015); M.G.L. c.90 §19. Above 20 ft, this row's escorts are the minimum; the permit sets any more.
Length
Permit required53'1" – 80'
Over-length permit needed; no escort by length up to 80'0". On the Turnpike and Metropolitan Highway System a pilot car follows only above 90' (Turnpike) or 80' (MHS), pilot cars go ahead and behind above 100' (Turnpike) or 95' (MHS), and two State Police vehicles are added only above 135'. Source: 700 CMR 7.07(4)(d)1-2, 4-5, 7.
- Rear escort 80'1" – 95'
- Front + Rear 95'1" – 115'
Front + Rear115'1" – 134'
State Police
Front + Rear134'1"+
State Police + 2 escorts. Above 200 ft, this row's escorts are the minimum; the permit sets any more.
Weight
Permit required130,001 lbs+
No escort is set by weight alone. A load over 130,000 lb is a Super Load and needs detailed engineering calculations. On the Turnpike and Metropolitan Highway System, a vehicle the Chief Engineer judges unable to keep a safe minimum speed may be required to travel with Massachusetts State Police - a police escort, not a private pilot car. MassDOT may add escort conditions on the permit. Source: 700 CMR 7.07(3) Table 5; 700 CMR 7.07(4)(d)7.
On interstate
Escorts begin at 12'1" wide
Width
Permit only up to 12'
- Rear escort 12'1" – 13'6"
- Front + Rear 13'7" – 14'11"
Front + Rear15'+
Pilot cars ahead of and behind the load. On the Turnpike and Metropolitan Highway System, two Massachusetts State Police vehicles are added only when the load is wider than 16' (15'0"-16'0" needs the two pilot cars only); permit services report a State Police escort above 14'11" on other MassDOT highways. Police escorts are not private pilot cars. Source: 700 CMR 7.07(4)(d)4-5, 7. Above 20 ft, this row's escorts are the minimum; the permit sets any more.
Height
Permit required13'7" – 13'8"
Over 13'6" tall needs a MassDOT special permit. No escort and no height pole are required at this height. On the Turnpike and Metropolitan Highway System the pilot-car rule has no height trigger, and its pilot-car equipment list has no pole (700 CMR 7.07(4)(d)). MassDOT reported to GAO that it has no pole-car requirement for overheight loads, and it may add conditions on the permit. Source: M.G.L. c.90 §19; 700 CMR 7.07(4)(d); GAO-15-235SP (Massachusetts, 2015).
Front escort13'9" – 13'11"
One front escort and a route/height survey over 13'8" tall on MassDOT highways. MassDOT sets escorts on each permit; this threshold is MassDOT practice as reported by permit services, not a written rule. On the Turnpike and Metropolitan Highway System the pilot-car rule has no height trigger, and its pilot-car equipment list has no pole (700 CMR 7.07(4)(d)). No height pole: no Massachusetts statute or regulation requires one, and MassDOT reported to GAO that it has no pole-car requirement for overheight loads. Source: GAO-15-235SP (Massachusetts, 2015); M.G.L. c.90 §19; 700 CMR 7.07(4)(d).
Front + Rear15'+
Two escorts plus a Massachusetts State Police escort over 14'11" tall on MassDOT highways, as reported by permit services (not a written rule). On the Turnpike and Metropolitan Highway System the pilot-car rule has no height trigger, and State Police are required only for loads wider than 16' or longer than 135', or for a vehicle the Chief Engineer judges too slow. Police escorts are not private pilot cars. No height pole: no Massachusetts statute or regulation requires one, and MassDOT reported to GAO that it has no pole-car requirement for overheight loads. Source: GAO-15-235SP (Massachusetts, 2015); M.G.L. c.90 §19; 700 CMR 7.07(4)(d)7. Above 20 ft, this row's escorts are the minimum; the permit sets any more.
Length
Permit only up to 80'
Rear escort80'1" – 95'
One pilot car following. On the Metropolitan Highway System a pilot car must follow a vehicle longer than 80' up to 95'; on the Turnpike the following pilot car starts only above 90' (to 100'). These length triggers do not apply to tandem units or to semi-trailer units with a semi-trailer of 53' or less; overhang rules still apply. Source: 700 CMR 7.07(4)(d)1-2.
Front + Rear95'1" – 115'
Pilot cars ahead of and behind the load. On the Metropolitan Highway System this starts above 95'; on the Turnpike a single following pilot car is enough up to 100', with pilot cars ahead and behind above 100' up to 135'. These length triggers do not apply to tandem units or to semi-trailer units with a semi-trailer of 53' or less; overhang rules still apply. Source: 700 CMR 7.07(4)(d)1-2, 4-5.
Front + Rear115'1" – 134'
Pilot cars ahead of and behind the load. On the Turnpike and Metropolitan Highway System no State Police escort is required at this length; two State Police vehicles are added only above 135'. Permit services report State Police escorts from 115' on other MassDOT highways. Source: 700 CMR 7.07(4)(d)4-5, 7.
Front + Rear134'1"+
Pilot cars ahead of and behind the load, plus two Massachusetts State Police vehicles above 135' on the Turnpike and Metropolitan Highway System (134'1"-135'0" needs no police there). Police escorts are not private pilot cars. Source: 700 CMR 7.07(4)(d)4-5, 7. Above 200 ft, this row's escorts are the minimum; the permit sets any more.
When a permitted load can move
- Standard hours
MassDOT allows permitted travel on state highways from 12:01 AM Monday to noon Saturday, and Sunday 12:01 AM to noon. The issued permit sets the actual days and hours for a given move. Peak-hour bans apply on I-90 and the Boston harbor tunnels.
- Night travel
MassDOT's published state highway window runs continuously from 12:01 AM Monday to noon Saturday, so it does not itself bar night movement. The issued permit controls and may restrict an over-dimensional move to daylight. Confirm the hours printed on the permit.
- Weekend travel
Travel is allowed until noon on Saturday and from 12:01 AM to noon on Sunday. No movement is authorized from Saturday noon to Sunday 12:01 AM, or from Sunday noon to Monday 12:01 AM.
- Holiday restrictions
No movement on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day. For New Year's Day, Independence Day and Christmas the ban runs from noon the day before to noon the day after.
- Urban restrictions
MassDOT ordinarily will not permit an oversize move on I-90 between Interchange 11A in Westborough and Interchange 24 in Boston eastbound 7-10 AM or westbound 3-7 PM, or in the harbor tunnels outbound from Logan 7-10 AM and inbound 3-7 PM. City ways need a local permit.
Signage Massachusetts expects
- Oversize load sign
An oversize vehicle not accompanied by a pilot car must carry a sign on the rear reading "Oversize Load". MassDOT publishes no banner size or letter height. A vehicle over 10 ft tall excluding load must show its height in numerals at least 4 in. high.
- Flags
MassDOT specifies 24 in. by 24 in. red flags on the right and left rear of the pilot car. A crane or boom projecting more than 4 ft past the bed or body must display a red flag or cloth, or a red light, at its extreme rear end. Load marking is set by permit condition.
Massachusetts permit office
The permit office is the authority on every number on this page. Call it, or open the official site, before you rely on a threshold for a load that is close to a line.
