ProMiles Permit Guidance vs Reading the Issued PDF

Published ·Updated ·7 min read ·7 sections

Published by JaloPermit. Product comparisons use linked public documentation; they are not independent rankings or hands-on vendor benchmarks.

Searches for “pro miles permit guidance” often mix two different products and two different jobs. One is ProMiles Permit Route Guidance: a free in-cab app that follows an agency-supplied route after you scan a barcode or enter a permit number. The other is reading the already-issued permit PDF — on paper, on a phone, or as a route card built from that PDF — so escorts, curfews and other printed conditions are easier to review before you roll.

Those jobs can both matter on the same move. They are not substitutes for each other, and neither one replaces the issued permit. This guide compares them from public documentation, not from a hands-on lab test.

This guide is published by JaloPermit, which appears in it. It summarizes linked public pages as of October 2026. It is not a ranking or an endorsement. Features and state support change, so confirm details with ProMiles and with the issuing office. For a deeper documentation walkthrough of the guidance app alone, see our ProMiles Permit Route Guidance review.

Two different jobs

Name the job before you pick a tool:

  • Follow the agency route in the cab. After the state has issued a single-trip routed permit, some states can supply that route to a driver app for visual and voice prompts along the permitted path.
  • Review what the permit document says. Before or beside that trip, someone still needs to read the PDF: dimensions, escorts, travel windows, weigh-station notes, bridge provisions and other conditions printed on the face of the permit.

ProMiles Permit Route Guidance is built for the first job where the state supports it. A PDF reading aid such as JaloPermit is built for the second. Ordering tools, agency permitting systems and document storage are different again — covered in our oversize permit management tools comparison.

What ProMiles Permit Route Guidance does

ProMiles' Permit Route Guidance page describes a free app that gives in-cab visual and voice guidance for state-issued permits from supporting states. The driver scans the barcode on the permit (often next to language about audible route guidance) or enters the permit number with the jurisdiction selected. The app retrieves route-following data from the state's permitting and routing system through a ProMiles server.

What the same page says the app does not do is just as important:

  • It has no routing capabilities of its own and no oversize/overweight restriction information of its own. It follows a breadcrumb trail and maneuver directions created in the agency system for that permit.
  • At this time it works with single-trip routed permits only, not annual or envelope permits.
  • It does not store the route; the driver must retrieve the route each time the app starts.
  • It does not currently tell the driver when a route change has happened for the permit.

State support lists have changed over time. The product page has listed supporting and planned states and has also shown jurisdictions in testing. Do not treat any published list as permanent. Confirm with the issuing office that your permit type and jurisdiction are supported before you rely on the app for a specific move.

Keep this product separate from ProMiles PermitManager (carrier-side ordering and related tools) and from AASHTOWare PermitRoute (agency permitting and routing). Those are different products for different steps in the permit lifecycle.

What reading the issued PDF does

Once a permit is issued, the PDF (or printed copy) is the document that carries the legal route and conditions. Reading it carefully is still required whether or not an in-cab guidance app is available for that state.

JaloPermit is a reading aid for that step. You drop an already-issued oversize or overweight permit PDF into the permit decoder on the JaloPermit homepage, and it builds a route card that can surface escorts, curfews, weigh stations, truck stops and low-bridge alerts for review.

The route card from the app. The front of a JaloPermit route card. The permit number is removed. This is not the original PDF.

It does not order, file or issue permits. It does not plan a candidate route, and it does not replace in-cab agency route following. Coverage is the 48 contiguous states. The issued permit always wins: compare the card with the original PDF, including any dashed or unresolved sections, before you rely on it. Supplementary bridge and roadside data is incomplete, so a missing alert is not clearance.

Guests get three free decodes a day with no account and no card. Logged-in users get 10 free decodes a day. After those free decodes, each one is $3.50. There is no subscription.

For a driver-facing checklist of what to pull off the PDF itself, see how to read an oversize load permit. For how planning software differs from the permitted route, see oversize load routing software.

Comparison table

Use the table to match the job. It is not a ranking.

ProMiles Permit Route Guidance Reading the issued PDF (e.g. JaloPermit route card)
Job In-cab visual and voice guidance on an agency-supplied route Review escorts, curfews and other conditions from the permit document
Input Barcode scan or permit number (plus jurisdiction when typed) The issued permit PDF
When it helps Your state supports the app for your single-trip routed permit and you need turn-by-turn style prompts along that path You need a faster review of what the PDF says before or beside the move
When it does not Unsupported states or permit types; annual/envelope permits; inventing a new route; OS/OW restriction lookup of its own Filing or ordering permits; replacing the PDF as legal authority; guaranteeing bridge clearance from a missing alert
Route authority Still the issued permit / agency system; app follows that route where supported Still the issued permit; the card is a reading aid only

When each helps — and when it does not

Reach for ProMiles Permit Route Guidance when the issuing office confirms support for your jurisdiction and permit, you have a single-trip routed permit, and the driver needs in-cab prompts along the agency path. Expect to retrieve the route every time you start the app. Do not expect the app to invent a new route if you leave the permitted path — ProMiles' page says off-route behavior returns the driver to instructions from the permit office.

Reach for PDF reading (or a route card) when you need to review printed conditions, brief a second driver or dispatcher, or cross-check escorts and travel windows against the document. Do this even when guidance is available: the app follows the path; it does not replace reading the conditions on the face of the permit.

Do not use either as a filing tool. Neither ProMiles Permit Route Guidance nor JaloPermit orders or issues permits. Keep PermitManager, state portals and permit services in their own lane.

How they fit together on one move

  1. Get the permit issued through your usual channel (state portal, carrier ordering tool or permit service).
  2. Read the PDF. Confirm dimensions, escorts, windows and special provisions. A route card from the JaloPermit homepage decoder can speed that review; always compare it to the original.
  3. If your state supports it, load ProMiles Permit Route Guidance from the barcode or permit number for in-cab following of that agency route.
  4. If the printed route and what you see in the cab disagree, stop and resolve it with the issuing office. The issued permit wins.

Optional map context for planning review — not a substitute for the permit — includes the free oversize permit map field guide and the bridge clearance checker. For more on separating ordering, guidance and reading, see oversize permit software: reading vs routing.

FAQs

Is ProMiles Permit Route Guidance the same as reading the permit PDF? No. ProMiles Permit Route Guidance is an in-cab app that follows an agency-supplied breadcrumb route after you scan a barcode or enter a permit number. Reading the issued PDF (or decoding it into a route card) is a review step that surfaces conditions from the document itself. They solve different jobs.

Does ProMiles Permit Route Guidance plan my own route? No. ProMiles' public page says the app has no routing capabilities of its own and no oversize/overweight restriction information of its own. It follows the route the state system already created for that permit.

Does JaloPermit file permits or replace ProMiles guidance? No. JaloPermit is a reading aid for already-issued permit PDFs. It does not order, file or issue permits, and it does not provide in-cab turn-by-turn guidance on an agency route. The issued permit remains the route authority.

What does JaloPermit cost? Guests get three free decodes a day with no account and no card. Logged-in users get 10 free decodes a day. After those free decodes, each one is $3.50. There is no subscription.

Which one should I use before a move? If your state supports route following for your single-trip routed permit, ProMiles Permit Route Guidance can help follow that agency route in the cab. Separately, reading the issued PDF (or reviewing a route card built from it) helps check escorts, curfews and other printed conditions. Many moves need both kinds of review. Confirm state support with the issuing office.
