Pilot Car Requirements by State: A Move-by-Move Review

Pilot-car requirements need to be checked for the state, permit type, load and roads involved. A national table with a single width number per state hides road-class distinctions, special conditions and operator-credential requirements.
Use this guide to build a state-by-state review for a specific move. It is not a nationwide legal threshold chart.
Build one row for each jurisdiction

Save the document version and relevant condition number. If two sources appear inconsistent, ask the issuing office; do not silently choose the less restrictive interpretation.
A specific example of why road class matters
The TxDMV Motor Carrier Handbook distinguishes front and rear placement by road type for certain dimensions. It also addresses combined dimensions and special load categories. Use the handbook and current permit for Texas; do not carry that result into another state.

Check credentials and equipment separately
Do not infer that a licence, course or association membership is accepted everywhere. Confirm the specific credential, any reciprocity, required equipment and insurance with the relevant authority. Record what was checked and when.
